Where: Pavia, Iloilo, Philippines

This festival is the ONLY FESTIVAL OF ITS KIND in the province of Iloilo celebrated in consonance with All Souls’ Day. The term “TIGKARALAG” comes from Ilonggo words, “tig” which means “season of” and “kalag” which means”soul”. Participated in by the barangays of the municipality.

The festival starts with a parade  from Brgy. Aganan to the town’s plaza for a dance-drama competition with a storyline reflective of Tigkaralag.

2009, I had the privileged to cover the event. When I arrived at the Plaza, there are a lot of people waiting for the competition to start.

First, a banner competition. Each competing Barangay, designs a spooky banner for this competition.

Second, a costume competition. This time, the competing Barangay will submit their spookiest costume.

Lastly, a dance competition. An interpretative dance for that matter. As each performance tells a story.

Mechanics:

1. This contest is open to all dogs (with or without pedigree).
2. Participants can join in one (1) category only. The categories are:

       • Small Breed = Php 500.00 worth of Gift Certificates, Plus Gift Packs from Purina Pro Plan
       • Large Breed = Php 500.00 worth of Gift Certificates, Plus Gift Packs from Purina Pro Plan
     • *All participants will receive Free Special Canned Dog Food from Alpo
3. Registration is from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on October 30, 2009 at the Event Center. Designated holding area for all dogs will be at the Food-court 6 Unleased Area.
4. All contestants will be assigned a corresponding number on a First-Come-First-Served basis on October 30.
5. Costumes must not be gory, gruesome, or disgusting to look at.
6. Judges decisions will be final and unappealable. Criteria for judging of costumes are as follows:
   • Relevance to Theme = 40%
   • Visual Impact = 35%
   • Stage Presence and Projection = 25%

Mechanics:

1. Open to all kids 4 to 12 years old.
2. The contest is on at SM “Supermalls” nationwide.
3. The participant must present a receipt with a minimum purchase of Php 300 from any mall tenants and 2 SM Greenbags from October 1 to 31, 2009.
4. Kids must dress up as their favorite Superhero. There should be no displaying of grotesque, lewd/obscene and gory costumes / make-up or special prosthetic.
5. Participants will be judged according to the following criteria:
   • Adherence to the theme = 30%
   • Creativity = 30%
   • Visual Impact = 30%
   • Projection and Style = 30%

   TOTAL = 100%

6. Categories and Prizes:
   • Best Superhero Costume (Male) = Php 3,000.00 worth of Gift Certificates
   • Best Superhero Costume (Female) = Php 3,000.00 worth of Gift Certificates
   • Best Superheroes (Tandem – 2 pax) = Php 3,000.00 worth of Gift Certificates
   • Best Superheroes (Group – more than 2) = Php 3,000.00 worth of Gift Certificates
   • Most Original Superhero Costume = Php 3,000.00 worth of Gift Certificates
7. Pre-registration will start on October 5, 2009 leading to on-site registration to start as early as 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM on October 31, 2009. Application forms are available at the Marketing Department of SM.
8. The party will kick off with the grand costume parade around the mall at 2:00 PM.
9. Costume Party will start at 3:00 PM and will culminate with the announcement of the winners.
10. The judges decision is final and irrevocable.
